Blackburn Clinical Services offers one-on-one therapy in West Los Angeles for the people who make productions happen behind the camera: grips, electricians, camera and sound crews, editors, production assistants, coordinators, hair and makeup, wardrobe, set builders, drivers, stagehands and live event crews. Long days, night shoots, months of work followed by months of waiting, and an industry that has been unsteady in Los Angeles all take a toll. We help with burnout, sleep, anxiety, depression and drinking or other use, and we schedule around the work. Call (888) 870 7405 or email info@blackburnclinical.com.

What the work does to sleep and mood
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that people working on motion pictures have busy schedules during filming and then a period of job searching between projects, and that about 35 percent of camera operators and of film and video editors were self-employed in 2025 (BLS: camera operators and editors). For sound and video technicians, it notes that film work can mean tight schedules and extra hours to meet deadlines, and that evening, weekend and holiday work is common (BLS: broadcast, sound and video technicians).
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health links shift work and long hours to poorer sleep, circadian rhythm disruption and strain on family and social life, and to higher rates of depression, occupational injury and poor perceived health (NIOSH). Twelve hour days, turnaround that leaves too little time to sleep, and a drive home after a night shoot are exactly the conditions that research describes.
Work that comes and goes
Production work in Los Angeles has been uncertain. When California more than doubled its film and television tax credit to $750 million a year in 2025, the Governor’s office said many projects that could not get credits had filmed outside the state (Office of the Governor). For crew, that can mean long gaps, worry about health coverage and hours, moving between jobs, or deciding whether to leave the industry. That uncertainty is a real stressor, not a personal failing, and it is a common reason people start therapy.
What crew members often bring to therapy
- Burnout. Exhaustion and numbness after a long show, and dread before the next one.
- Sleep that never resets. Night shoots, early calls and split weeks that leave you wired at the wrong times. Poor sleep feeds anxiety and low mood.
- The crash after wrap. Going from a crew that feels like family to an empty calendar can bring loneliness and depression.
- Money and career anxiety. Gaps between jobs, keeping up hours, and questions about whether to stay in the business.
- Relationships. Missed birthdays and weekends, a partner who parents alone during a show, or time on location. See relationship counseling.
- Drinking or other use. A drink to come down after a long day, or stimulants to get through one, can become a pattern. We treat substance use and mental health together through addiction psychiatry and dual diagnosis treatment.
- Injuries and pain. Physical work takes a toll, and pain affects sleep and mood. Therapy can help alongside your medical care.
How therapy fits around a production schedule
Therapy sessions are one-on-one in our office in Mar Vista or by secure video for clients located in California. Between jobs, many people come weekly. During a show, tell us your schedule and we will work around it within our weekday hours, Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM; some people pause and plan a return date before the show starts. If anxiety, depression, ADHD or sleep problems need medication, our psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners can evaluate you. For more support without a traditional program, the Concierge Outpatient Program offers several hours a week of one-on-one care with no groups. Nothing is shared with a production, employer or union unless you give written permission.
Actors, writers, musicians and other entertainment professionals can also see therapy and psychiatry for entertainment industry professionals and therapy for writers and creatives. Business managers and representatives can see our page for entertainment business managers, talent managers and agents.
Questions
Can I start therapy if I might book a show next month?
Yes. Many crew members start between jobs. When you book a show, we talk about your schedule and plan around it, including pausing and setting a return date if needed.
Will my production, employer or union know I am in therapy?
Not from us. Anything we share with anyone outside your care team happens only with your written permission.
Is it normal to feel low after a show wraps?
Yes. Going from long, intense days with a close crew to an empty schedule is a big change. If the low mood lasts more than a couple of weeks or makes it hard to function, it is worth talking to someone.
Do you help with drinking or other substance use?
Yes. We treat substance use together with anxiety, depression and sleep problems, and our psychiatrists can evaluate whether medication would help.
Do you take insurance?
We are an out-of-network practice and provide superbills, which some people submit to their health plan for out-of-network reimbursement. Check your own plan’s out-of-network benefits. See Fees and Insurance.
