Psychiatric medication management is ongoing care from a psychiatric prescriber who evaluates your symptoms, decides with you whether medication makes sense, and adjusts the plan over time. At Blackburn Clinical Services in West Los Angeles, our psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners provide psychiatric evaluations, diagnosis and medication management for adults and adolescents, coordinated with therapy so your whole treatment plan works as one. What medication management includes
- Psychiatric evaluation. A thorough look at your history, symptoms and goals, leading to a diagnosis and a recommended plan.
- A decision you make together. Your prescriber explains the options, including whether medication makes sense for you at all.
- Ongoing follow-up. Regular visits to review how you are doing, watch for side effects and adjust doses or medications as needs change.
- Coordination with therapy. If you also see a Blackburn therapist, your care is coordinated so everyone works from the same plan. Learn more about therapy.
- Gene testing when useful. Pharmacogenetic gene testing can add information your prescriber considers when choosing a medication.
- Addiction and co-occurring conditions. Medication-assisted treatment and addiction psychiatry for people facing substance use alongside mental health conditions. See dual diagnosis treatment.
Conditions we manage
Our prescribers treat anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, OCD, trauma and PTSD, schizophrenia, alcohol use disorder, opioid use disorder and more. See every condition on our Conditions We Treat page.
Do you need a psychiatrist or a therapist?
A psychiatric prescriber can diagnose and prescribe medication. A therapist provides talk therapy. Many people do best with both, and at Blackburn the two work together. Read Psychiatrist vs Therapist: Which Do You Need? and What to Expect at Your First Psychiatrist Appointment.
All of our services are available individually or can be combined into a customized package to meet each person’s needs. Learn more about psychiatry at Blackburn.
Questions
What is psychiatric medication management?
It is ongoing care from a psychiatric prescriber: an evaluation, a decision together about whether medication makes sense, and regular follow-up to adjust the plan as needs change.
Do I have to take medication?
No. Your prescriber recommends a plan that fits your life, including whether medication makes sense, and you decide together.
Do you take insurance?
We are an out-of-network practice. We do not take or bill insurance, and we provide superbills so you can seek out-of-network reimbursement. See Fees and Insurance.
Can I combine medication management with therapy?
Yes. Psychiatry at Blackburn is coordinated with therapy and other services so medication, therapy and the rest of a treatment plan work together as one.
