Coming Home From Residential or Wilderness: Back to School

The weeks after a teen comes home from a wilderness program, therapeutic boarding school or residential treatment are some of the most important in their recovery, and the best time to line up outpatient care is before they come home. Blackburn Clinical Services offers one-on-one therapy in our West Los Angeles office for teens 13 to 17, family sessions for parents, and a more intensive one-on-one step down option, to help students settle back home and return to school, including private and independent high schools.

Planning a return home? Call before discharge. Call (888) 870 7405
Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM. Therapy takes place in our office at 12326 Venice Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90066, or by secure video for clients located in California.

Who this is for

  • Parents whose teen is finishing a wilderness or outdoor behavioral health program
  • Families whose teen is leaving a therapeutic boarding school or residential treatment center
  • Teens returning to a previous private school, starting a new school, or not yet sure which school is next
  • Educational consultants and program clinicians looking for an outpatient therapist in West Los Angeles

Why the return is a vulnerable time

Programs away from home offer structure around the clock. Coming home means old friends, old routines, phones, freedom and, for many teens, a school where classmates noticed they were gone. In a small private school community, questions like “Where were you?” can feel overwhelming. Parents are often exhausted and unsure how strict to be. Without a plan, the gains made away from home can fade quickly.

What therapy at Blackburn looks like after a program

  • Planning before discharge. It helps to call several weeks before your teen comes home. With your written permission, we can speak with the program’s clinical team to understand the treatment so far and the discharge recommendations.
  • An assessment once home. We meet your teen and your family to build a plan that continues the work already done.
  • One-on-one therapy in our office. Teens keep practicing the skills they learned, using approaches such as DBT, CBT, ACT, EMDR and Brainspotting where appropriate.
  • Family sessions. We help families turn program agreements into realistic home rules about phones, curfews, driving, friends and school work, and practice handling conflict.
  • A step down option. The Blackburn Concierge Outpatient Program offers typically 3 to 5 hours a week of focused one-on-one therapy, with no groups, an individualized alternative to traditional IOP for the first months home. It treats both substance use and primary mental health issues in adolescents.
  • Psychiatry. If your teen takes medication, psychiatric care can be arranged so that it is continued and monitored.
  • Hours: Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, scheduled within those hours around the school day.

Returning to school

  • Talk to the school early. Each school decides on re-enrollment, schedule changes and any conditions for return. Ask what they need and by when.
  • Decide what to share. Families choose what the school knows. With your written permission, we can speak with a counselor or dean, and when clinically appropriate we can provide documentation for your teen’s school.
  • Consider a gradual start. A lighter course load, a later start, or a check-in with a trusted adult can make the first weeks manageable.
  • Prepare a short answer. Help your teen rehearse a simple, true response for classmates, such as “I was dealing with some health stuff and I am back now.”
  • Plan for credits and catching up. Ask how work done at the program will be counted and what needs to be made up, and keep the catch up plan realistic.

What parents can do now

  • Call before your teen comes home so the first appointment is already set.
  • Get the discharge plan in writing and share it with us, with permission.
  • Agree on house rules before day one, including phones, transportation and friends.
  • Know the warning signs your teen’s program identified, and what to do if you see them.
  • Look after yourselves. Parents can book parent-only sessions about their teen, or their own therapy, and find more support through family services.

When to get urgent help

If your teen is in danger right now, call 911. If your teen talks about wanting to die, is harming themselves or you are worried they might, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, any time of day. You can call 988 as a parent, for advice about what to do next.

Questions

When should we contact you?

Ideally a few weeks before your teen comes home, so the first appointment and any coordination with the program happen right away.

Can you talk with my teen’s program or educational consultant?

Yes, with your written permission. We share only what you authorize.

Is there something between weekly therapy and another program?

Yes. The Blackburn Concierge Outpatient Program offers typically 3 to 5 hours a week of one-on-one therapy, with no groups, and flexes with clinical need.

Can you help my teen go back to their old private school?

We help your teen and family prepare, and with your written permission we can speak with the school. When clinically appropriate, we can provide documentation for your teen’s school. The school makes its own decisions about re-enrollment.

Do you work with teens who were in treatment for substance use?

Yes. We treat substance use and mental health together in adolescents. See our dual diagnosis page for more.

More for families: therapy for private school students, dual diagnosis treatment and trauma and PTSD treatment.
