Online Teen Therapy for Orange County Families

Blackburn Clinical Services offers therapy by secure video for teens ages 13 to 17 in Irvine, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach and South Orange County, with family and parent-only sessions by video so parents are part of the work. Our office is in West Los Angeles, about 40 miles from Irvine and Newport Beach in a straight line and farther from South County, so Orange County families see us by video, Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM.

Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM. Teen therapy, family and parent-only sessions by secure video, for families in Orange County and elsewhere in California.

At a glance

  • Who we see: high school age teens, 13 to 17, from private and independent, Catholic and public high schools, and their parents.
  • How: one-on-one therapy by secure video. Our only office is at 12326 Venice Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90066; you are welcome to come in when it helps.
  • How far (straight line): about 40 to 42 miles from Newport Beach and Irvine, and about 50 miles or more from Mission Viejo and South County. Weekly in-office visits are not realistic for most families; video is how we work with Orange County.
  • When: Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, with flexible scheduling inside those hours.
  • Parents: family sessions, parent-only sessions about your teen, and therapy for parents themselves, all available by secure video for clients located in California.
  • Psychiatry: psychiatric care can be arranged if your teen needs it; we explain how when you call.

Why video, not the I-405

From Irvine or Newport Beach, reaching our office means the I-405 north past Long Beach and LAX, a corridor where traffic is heavy at most hours. From South County it is longer again. A weekday round trip could take most of an afternoon, which would mean pulling a teen out of school and a parent out of work every week. By video, the session takes the session’s time and nothing more, and a teen can join from home after school inside our weekday hours.

Fitting therapy around the school calendar

Orange County public districts such as Irvine Unified, Newport-Mesa Unified, Capistrano Unified and Saddleback Valley Unified each set their own calendars, and private, independent and Catholic high schools often follow different ones, with their own breaks and exam weeks. Fall and spring sports seasons, club travel weekends and AP exams in May (College Board) all compete for time. A fixed weekly video time is easier to keep through all of it than a drive to Los Angeles.

What we hear from parents of high schoolers here

Parents in Orange County often describe teens balancing a demanding college prep load with year-round club sports, coastal social life and a lot of attention on how things look from the outside. We hear about anxiety and perfectionism, sports injuries that take away a teen’s identity, and parties where vaping, alcohol and cannabis are easy to find. When substance use and mood are tangled together, see teen vaping, cannabis and alcohol. When the pressure is academic, see therapy for high-achieving teens.

What video therapy looks like at Blackburn

Your teen joins a one-on-one session from a private room on a phone, tablet or computer. Approaches such as CBT, ACT and DBT skills are chosen for your teen; EMDR and Brainspotting are offered in our office, not by video. Family sessions and parent-only sessions happen by video too, so both parents can join from work or home. Use headphones, a closed door and a personal device rather than a school-issued laptop. Our online teen therapy guide covers privacy at home and when in-office care is the better choice.

What parents can do now

  • Notice patterns, not single bad days: pulling away from friends or a sport they loved, sleep changes, slipping grades, secrecy about where they go.
  • Know the county resources. OC Links, run by the Orange County Health Care Agency, is a free 24/7 phone and chat line at (855) 625-4657 that connects residents with mental health and substance use services (OC Health Care Agency).
  • Call us to talk through what you are seeing and whether video therapy is a good fit.

When to get urgent help

Video therapy is not an emergency service. If your teen talks about suicide, has hurt themselves or you fear for their safety, call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or call 911. In Orange County, OC Links at (855) 625-4657 can also help connect you with local crisis services.

Questions parents ask

Do you have an office in Orange County?

No. Our only office is in West Los Angeles, about 40 miles from Irvine in a straight line. Orange County families see us by secure video.

Can my teen fit sessions around sports?

Usually. Our hours are Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, and without a drive to Los Angeles a session takes only the session’s time. We help you choose a weekly time around practice.

Do you help teens with vaping, drinking or cannabis?

Yes. We treat substance use and mental health together for teens whose use is tangled up with anxiety or low mood, with family sessions for parents.

How are parents involved?

Family sessions and parent-only sessions can be by secure video, and each parent can join from a different place in California, including from work. Parents can also have therapy of their own by video.

Is psychiatry available?

Psychiatric care can be arranged if your teen needs it. We explain how when you call.
