Getting here from Mid-Wilshire, Hancock Park and Los Feliz

  • By car from Mid-Wilshire and Hancock Park: the I-10 west is the usual freeway route. Venice Blvd is a simple surface alternative: it runs continuously west from Mid-City through Culver City to our office in Mar Vista.
  • By car from Los Feliz: the trip crosses much of the city and is noticeably longer. Weekly sessions are workable for many families with a fixed time; we will be honest with you if it looks like too much.
  • By bus: Metro Line 33 runs the length of Venice Blvd from Downtown, past the Pico/Rimpau Transit Center in Mid-City, south of Hancock Park, through Culver City to Mar Vista. For an older teen who rides transit, it is a one-seat trip from that part of the city.
  • By rail: the Metro E Line’s Culver City station sits on Venice Blvd, where Line 33 continues west to our office. From Los Feliz, the B Line connects to the E Line downtown, which makes for a long trip.

Drive times on the I-10 change a great deal by hour, so we do not quote one. Try the trip once at the time you are considering before you commit.

Many teens with depression never get treatment

The National Institute of Mental Health reports that in 2021 about 20.1 percent of U.S. adolescents ages 12 to 17, roughly 5 million teens, had a major depressive episode in the past year, and only 40.6 percent of them received treatment (NIMH). Common reasons families wait: hoping it is a phase, a teen who refuses, worry about what the school will find out, or not knowing where to start.

Signs worth taking seriously include irritability that does not let up, losing interest in things your teen used to love, big changes in sleep or appetite, pulling away from friends, and talk of feeling worthless or hopeless. See depression treatment and anxiety treatment.

If your teen does not want to go

  • Start with what they care about, such as sleep, stress or getting a parent off their back, rather than a diagnosis.
  • Offer a first meeting, not a commitment. Many teens agree to one appointment when it is framed as a chance to decide for themselves.
  • Explain privacy plainly. At the start, the therapist explains to your teen and to you what stays between them and when safety means parents are told.
  • Get support yourself. Parents can begin with family sessions while a teen is still deciding. See family services.

What therapy at Blackburn looks like for teens

  • An assessment with your teen and with you.
  • Weekly one-on-one therapy in our office, using approaches such as CBT, DBT, ACT, EMDR and Brainspotting, chosen for your teen. No groups.
  • Family sessions to change patterns at home, not just in the therapy room.
  • School: documentation for your teen’s school when clinically appropriate. We speak with a school or counselor only with written permission.
  • More support if needed: the Concierge Outpatient Program, typically 3 to 5 hours a week of focused one-on-one therapy for adolescents, as an individualized alternative to traditional IOP.

When to get urgent help

If your teen talks about suicide, has hurt themselves or you are afraid for their safety, call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or call 911. The Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, which organizes public services for central Los Angeles as Service Area 4, Metro LA, runs a 24/7 help line at 1-800-854-7771 (LA County DMH).

More for families

Families at independent and private high schools can see therapy for private school students. Families passing through on Venice Blvd may also see therapy for Culver City residents. See adolescent services, ADHD testing and areas we serve.

Questions parents ask

How do we get to your office from Hancock Park or Mid-Wilshire?

Most families drive the I-10 west. Venice Blvd is a simple surface route that runs continuously west from Mid-City to our office at 12326 Venice Blvd, and Metro Line 33 runs along it.

Is Los Feliz too far for weekly therapy?

It is a longer trip, about 11 miles in a straight line across the city. Many families make it work with a fixed weekly time. Call us and we will talk honestly about whether it fits.

My teen refuses to see a therapist. What can we do?

Offer a single first meeting rather than a commitment, start with what your teen cares about, and explain how privacy works. Parents can begin with family sessions while a teen decides.

Do you treat teen depression?

Yes. Therapy for depression is one-on-one in our office, with family sessions for parents, and psychiatric care can be arranged when it is needed.

When are appointments?

Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM. We work with families on a recurring time within those hours that disrupts school as little as possible.
