Why treat both at the same time

Substance use rarely happens in isolation. Anxiety, depression, trauma and mood disorders often come with it, and treating one without the other can stall recovery. Federal health agencies recommend treating co-occurring conditions together rather than one after the other. At Blackburn, the psychiatrist and the therapist work from the same plan, so medication, therapy and family support point in the same direction.

How we treat dual diagnosis at Blackburn

  • Psychiatric evaluation. A thorough assessment of mental health and substance use history. Learn more about addiction psychiatry.
  • Medication management. Ongoing care for anxiety, depression, mood disorders and other conditions, adjusted as needs change. See psychiatric medication management.
  • Medication-assisted treatment (MAT). Medications that reduce cravings and support stability in early recovery, used when appropriate.
  • Outpatient detox. For people who qualify medically, a structured alternative to a hospital stay that begins with an assessment by a board certified addiction psychiatrist. Learn more about outpatient detox.
  • Individual therapy. Evidence-based approaches chosen for each client, including CBT, DBT, ACT, EMDR and Brainspotting, to address the reasons behind use, build coping skills and support relapse prevention. Learn more about therapy.
  • More structure when needed. Our Concierge Outpatient Program offers 3 to 5 hours a week of one-on-one care with no groups and no hour requirements.
  • Family support. Family services include family coaching and a free virtual family support group that meets every other week, led by a licensed therapist from Blackburn Clinical Services.

All of our services are available individually or can be combined into a customized package to meet each person’s needs.
