Questions about memory and cognitive testing

What does cognitive testing measure?

It measures how well different thinking skills work: memory, attention, processing speed, executive function (planning, organizing and switching between tasks), language and visual spatial skills. Results are compared with people of the same age so strengths and weaknesses stand out.

When does memory testing make sense?

Common reasons include noticing changes in memory or focus, trouble keeping up at school or work, questions after an illness, medical treatment or substance use, wanting a baseline to compare against later, or wanting to know whether stress, mood or sleep is affecting thinking.

Is memory testing only for older adults?

No. Students, working adults and teens are tested too, for example when concentration has slipped, when schoolwork suddenly feels harder, or when someone wants to understand how they learn best.

Can anxiety or depression affect memory?

Yes. Anxiety, depression, poor sleep and stress can all affect attention and memory. Testing helps separate these effects from other causes, which changes what treatment makes sense.

Should I also see a doctor about memory changes?

Yes. New or worsening memory problems should also be discussed with a physician, who can check for medical causes. Testing results can be shared with your doctor with your permission.

How long does memory and cognitive testing take?

Usually about two weeks from the first appointment to feedback and the written report. Collateral calls, a one hour initial evaluation and 4 to 6 hours of testing happen over about a week. The one hour feedback session and the written report usually follow within a week after that.

Can you fail a cognitive test?

No. There is no pass or fail. The tasks are designed so that no one gets everything right, and the goal is an accurate picture of how your thinking works, not a score to beat.

What do I get at the end?

A written report and a feedback session that explain the results in plain language, along with recommendations for school, work, daily life and care.

Do I need a referral?

No. Referrals from doctors, therapists and schools are welcome but not required. Anyone can call (888) 870-7405 to book.
