Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM. Students and parents can call. Students 18 and older take part in the assessment and decide what is shared.
What mental health programs are available for college students in Los Angeles?
Students usually have several options, and the right one depends on how much support is needed and where the student is living.
| Option | What it is | Often a fit when |
|---|---|---|
| Campus counseling center | Counseling for enrolled students, often short term | The student is on campus and needs a starting point |
| Outpatient therapy and psychiatry | Weekly one-on-one therapy, with psychiatric care if needed | The student is home in LA or wants care that continues across terms |
| Concierge Outpatient Program | 3 to 5 hours a week of one-on-one care, no groups, scheduled around school | A hard term or a leave calls for more than weekly therapy |
| Intensive outpatient or residential programs | Group-based or 24-hour programs elsewhere | More structure or safety is needed; we help families find the right setting |
Why is college a common time to need care?
Young adults have the highest rates of mental illness of any adult age group. The National Institute of Mental Health reports that in 2022, 36.2 percent of adults aged 18 to 25 had a mental illness in the past year (NIMH). In the 2024 to 2025 Healthy Minds Study, 37 percent of students had moderate to severe depressive symptoms and 32 percent had moderate to severe anxiety symptoms (Healthy Minds Network). Students who come home for a summer, a break or a leave often lose access to their campus clinician, and a local practice can provide continuity. See college student mental health statistics.
What do we help college students with?
- Academic stress and falling behind: missed classes, incompletes, probation and the avoidance that makes it worse.
- Home from school and struggling: sleeping all day, withdrawn, drinking more, or unable to face going back.
- Leave of absence and return: care during a leave and planning for a return. See clinical evaluations for a leave or return.
- Attention and learning: ADHD testing and neuropsychological testing with recommendations for school.
- Substance use: alcohol, cannabis or stimulants that affect school, sleep or safety. See dual diagnosis treatment.
- A first episode of serious symptoms: hearing or seeing things others do not, a sudden manic episode or severe depression. See schizophrenia and psychosis care.
How does care work at Blackburn?
- Therapy: one-on-one sessions in our Mar Vista office or by secure video for clients located in California, using CBT, DBT, ACT and other approaches. See therapy.
- Psychiatry: evaluation and medication management can be arranged and coordinated with therapy; we explain how when you call.
- Families: parents can get support of their own through family services. See help for parents of a struggling college student.
- Fees: out-of-network practice with superbills. See Fees and Insurance.
Who gets information when the student is an adult?
A college student who is 18 or older is an adult patient. Anything we share outside the care team happens only with the student’s written permission. If the student wants a parent involved, we talk about that together at the start. Counselors can see for school and college counselors, and students home anywhere in Los Angeles County can find their city on areas we serve. Students looking for mentoring rather than clinical care can explore Blackburn Mentoring, a sister organization.

Frequently asked questions
What mental health programs are available for college students in Los Angeles?
Most campuses have a counseling center for enrolled students. Outside campus, options include private outpatient therapy and psychiatry, one-on-one programs such as our Concierge Outpatient Program, group-based intensive outpatient programs, and residential care. In a crisis, call or text 988.
Can a student who is home from college out of state be seen in Los Angeles?
Yes. Students staying in Los Angeles can be seen for therapy in our office or by secure video for clients located in California, and psychiatric care can be arranged, during a break, a summer or a leave.
Can you help with a medical leave of absence?
We provide treatment during a leave and help plan the return. Each campus sets its own leave and readmission process. When clinically appropriate, we can provide letters or documentation for the leave or the return, shared only with written permission from the student.
Can a parent make the first call?
Yes. Parents often call first. Because students 18 and older are adult patients, the student takes part in the assessment and decides what information is shared.
Do you test for ADHD in college students?
Yes. ADHD testing takes place in person at our office, and neuropsychological testing includes recommendations for school.
What if my student is having a first episode of psychosis?
Call us to discuss an evaluation, because early treatment matters. If there is any immediate danger, call 911, or call or text 988.
In a crisis: call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or call 911 in an emergency.
