Two mountain passes on a school day

From the Santa Clarita Valley, our office means the I-5 through the Newhall Pass, then the I-405 through the San Fernando Valley and over the Sepulveda Pass. Many Santa Clarita parents already make a long commute into Los Angeles for work, and some teens commute to private or independent high schools in the San Fernando Valley. Adding a weekly afternoon trip to the Westside is usually not realistic. By video, your teen can join from home after school inside our weekday hours, and a parent can join from the office.

Fitting therapy around the school calendar

Most public high schools in the valley are part of the William S. Hart Union High School District, and private, independent and Catholic high schools in the area and in the San Fernando Valley often follow different calendars, with their own breaks and finals weeks. When a family has teens in both, schedules rarely line up. A fixed weekly video time keeps therapy steady through finals, AP exams in May (College Board) and the weeks before winter break.

What we hear from parents of high schoolers here

Parents here often describe a family schedule shaped by long commutes: a parent who leaves before the teen wakes and gets home after dinner, and a teen who spends a lot of time alone or online. We hear about anxiety, low mood, school avoidance and teens who seem fine at school but fall apart at home. See school refusal and anxiety and social media, phones and teen anxiety.

What video therapy looks like at Blackburn

Your teen joins a one-on-one session from a private room on a phone, tablet or computer. Approaches such as CBT, ACT and DBT skills are chosen for your teen; EMDR and Brainspotting are offered in our office, not by video. Family sessions and parent-only sessions happen by video too, so both parents can join from work or home. Use headphones, a closed door and a personal device rather than a school-issued laptop. Our online teen therapy guide covers privacy at home and when in-office care is the better choice.

What parents can do now

  • Notice patterns, not single bad days: sleep, appetite, friendships, grades or activities that change for more than a couple of weeks.
  • Know the county resources. Public mental health services for the area are organized by the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health as Service Area 2, the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys (LA County DMH).
  • Call us to talk through what you are seeing and whether video is a good fit for your teen.

When to get urgent help

Video therapy is not an emergency service. If your teen talks about suicide, has hurt themselves or you fear for their safety, call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or call 911. Los Angeles County’s Department of Mental Health 24/7 help line is 1-800-854-7771.

Questions parents ask

Do you have an office in Santa Clarita?

No. Our only office is at 12326 Venice Blvd in Mar Vista, West Los Angeles, about 27 miles away in a straight line. Most Santa Clarita Valley families see us by secure video.

How are parents involved?

Family sessions and parent-only sessions can be by secure video, and each parent can join from a different place in California, including from work. Parents can also have therapy of their own by video.

My teen keeps missing school because of anxiety. Can you help?

Yes. School refusal and anxiety-related absences are common reasons families call. Therapy is one-on-one, using approaches such as CBT, with family sessions so parents know how to help. When clinically appropriate, we can provide documentation for your teen’s school.

Can my teen do sessions after school?

Our hours are Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM. Without the drive, late afternoon times inside those hours are often realistic for teens who get home in time.

Is psychiatry available?

Psychiatric care can be arranged if your teen needs it. We explain how when you call.
