Evaluation for Test Accommodations in Los Angeles

Blackburn Clinical Services in Los Angeles arranges evaluations for children, teens and adults who need documentation for testing accommodations: 504 plans and IEPs at school, the SAT, PSAT, AP Exams and ACT, college disability services, and graduate and professional exams such as the LSAT, MCAT and the California Bar Exam. Evaluations are conducted by licensed psychologists, and testing sessions take place in person in Culver City. Each evaluation ends with a written report and a feedback session. The test sponsor, not the evaluator, makes the final decision, so the report is written to answer the questions each sponsor asks.

What accommodations documentation needs to show

Every sponsor words its guidelines differently, but most ask the same five questions. A useful evaluation answers each of them plainly.

  1. 01A clear diagnosisThe condition, how it was identified and the tests used, with scores reported in a way the reviewer can check.
  2. 02How it affects you nowCurrent functional limits in reading, writing, attention, processing speed or test taking, not only a history.
  3. 03A reason for each accommodationWhy extended time, breaks, a separate room or another support fits those limits, one accommodation at a time.
  4. 04History of supportPlans, informal supports or past accommodations at school or work, and how they helped.
  5. 05A qualified evaluatorA licensed professional using standardized measures that suit the person and the question.

School: 504 plans and IEPs

In public schools, a 504 plan or an IEP sets out the supports a student receives, and an evaluation can help the school team decide what fits. Private and independent schools usually use their own learning plans instead. In both settings a recent evaluation gives the team specific, written recommendations to work from.

SAT, PSAT, AP and ACT

The College Board and ACT each run their own process, and both usually go through the high school. Start well before the test date; the College Board and ACT both publish request deadlines for each test.

Role of an IEP or 504 planNot automatic, but most students with a current plan that meets College Board criteria have their current accommodations approved automaticallyA current IEP or 504 plan that documents the accommodations is usually enough for the same accommodations
Without a planDocumentation from an evaluation supports the requestDocumentation from a licensed, qualified professional is needed
How long it lastsUntil one year after high school graduation, across College Board testsSet by ACT for each request

College, graduate and professional exams

After high school, each college and each exam sponsor decides on its own. Approval from one does not bind another, although a record of past accommodations usually helps.

College
Each college’s disability services office sets its own documentation guidelines for classes and exams. Ask the office early, ideally before the first term.
LSAT
Requests go through your LSAC JD Services account. Accommodations approved on a previous LSAT are generally approved again automatically, with some exceptions. A verification letter showing accommodations on the SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, MCAT or certain other tests can support a request.
MCAT
The AAMC reviews requests through its own accommodations application, with supporting documentation. Apply well before you plan to test.
California Bar Exam
The State Bar of California takes requests through its Applicant Portal and encourages filing about six months ahead. Final deadlines are January 1 for the February exam and June 1 for the July exam. Accommodations approved in college or law school receive considerable weight.
GRE, USMLE and others
Each sponsor publishes its own guidelines. Bring them to the first call and the evaluation can be planned around them.

How to plan the timing

  1. 01Find the deadlineLook up the request deadline for the exam or school term, then count back.
  2. 02Read the sponsor’s guidelinesNote how recent documentation must be and what it must include.
  3. 03Call to bookTell us the exam and the deadline so the report is written for it.
  4. 04Initial evaluation and testingCollateral calls as needed, a one hour initial evaluation and 4 to 6 hours of testing in person in Culver City, over about a week.
  5. 05Feedback and written reportA one hour feedback session and the written report, usually within a week after testing, before the request is filed.

Questions about accommodations testing

Can a private evaluation get my teen extended time on the SAT?

It can support the request, but it does not decide it. The College Board’s Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) reviews every request, usually submitted by the school’s SSD coordinator. Most students with a current IEP, 504 plan or formal school plan that meets College Board criteria have their current accommodations approved automatically. Without a plan, documentation from an evaluation carries more of the weight.

Does an IEP or 504 plan carry over to the SAT or ACT?

Not on its own. The College Board says an IEP or 504 plan does not automatically provide accommodations on its tests; the request still goes through SSD, although students asking for the same accommodations they use under a current plan often need nothing more. ACT has its own request process through the school, and a current IEP or 504 plan that documents the accommodations is usually enough for the same accommodations on the ACT.

How long does College Board approval last?

According to the College Board, approval generally does not need to be renewed for each test. Accommodations stay in effect until one year after high school graduation and apply across the PSAT, SAT and AP Exams, unless the College Board is told the student no longer needs them.

What documentation do I need for LSAT accommodations?

LSAC accepts requests through your JD Services account. If you were approved for accommodations on a previous LSAT, LSAC generally approves the same or substantially similar accommodations automatically, with some exceptions. If you had accommodations on the SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, MCAT or certain other tests, a verification letter from that test sponsor can support the request. New requests need documentation that meets LSAC’s requirements.

Can testing help with MCAT or bar exam accommodations?

Yes. The AAMC reviews MCAT requests through its own accommodations application, and the State Bar of California reviews bar exam requests through its Applicant Portal. Both look for documentation from a qualified professional that explains the condition, the current limitations and why each accommodation is needed. The State Bar also gives considerable weight to accommodations previously approved in college or law school.

How long does an evaluation for accommodations take?

Usually about two weeks from the first appointment to feedback and the written report. Collateral calls, a one hour initial evaluation and 4 to 6 hours of testing happen over about a week. The one hour feedback session and the written report usually follow within a week after that. Knowing that timeline can help you plan around test registration and accommodation request deadlines. Each school and testing organization sets its own deadlines and review times, so start early.

How recent does an evaluation need to be?

It depends on the test sponsor and the condition. Many sponsors want documentation that reflects how the condition affects you now, so an older report may need an update. Check the current guidelines of the exam you are taking before you book, and tell us which exam it is when you call.

Is a psychoeducational evaluation the same as an accommodations evaluation?

They overlap. A psychoeducational evaluation focuses on learning and school performance and often supports a 504 plan, IEP or private school learning plan. An evaluation for exam accommodations is written with a specific test sponsor in mind and explains the need for each accommodation requested. One evaluation can often serve both purposes if that is planned from the start.

Do I need a referral?

No. Referrals from doctors, therapists and schools are welcome but not required. Anyone can call (888) 870-7405 to book.
