Pasadena to the Westside on a school day

The trip from Pasadena to our office usually means the I-110 into downtown Los Angeles and the I-10 west, or the SR-134 and US-101 through Glendale and Hollywood. Every route crosses central Los Angeles, and at the times teens are free on a weekday, the round trip can easily take more time than the session itself. By video, a teen in Altadena or Arcadia can finish the school day, get home and join a late afternoon session inside our hours, with no early dismissal and no parent leaving work to drive.

Fitting therapy around the school calendar

San Gabriel Valley families juggle more than one calendar. Public districts in the area, including Pasadena Unified, Arcadia Unified, San Marino Unified and La Cañada Unified, set their own start dates and breaks, and private and independent high schools often follow a different schedule again, with their own breaks and exam weeks. Siblings at different schools can mean three calendars in one house. A fixed weekly video time is easier to protect than a weekly drive, and it keeps therapy going during finals, AP exam weeks in May (College Board) and the stretch before winter break, when stress tends to peak.

What we hear from parents of high schoolers here

Parents in Pasadena and the foothill communities often describe teens who carry a heavy academic load: honors and AP classes, long commutes to a private or independent school across the valley, music, robotics or competitive sports, and an early start to college planning. Multigenerational and multilingual households are common, and a teen and their parents may see stress, success and therapy differently. Family sessions by video give everyone a place to talk about expectations without it turning into another argument at the dinner table. What video therapy looks like at Blackburn

Your teen joins a one-on-one session from a private room on a phone, tablet or computer. Approaches such as CBT, ACT and DBT skills are chosen for your teen; EMDR and Brainspotting are offered in our office, not by video. Family sessions and parent-only sessions happen by video too, so both parents can join from work or home. Use headphones, a closed door and a personal device rather than a school-issued laptop. Our online teen therapy guide covers privacy at home and when in-office care is the better choice.

What parents can do now

  • Notice patterns, not single bad days: sleep, appetite, friendships, grades or activities that change for more than a couple of weeks.
  • Use local public resources too. Pasadena runs its own city Department of Public Health, separate from the county (LA County locator), and county mental health services in the area are organized by the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health by service area (LA County DMH).
  • Call us to talk through what you are seeing and whether video is a good fit for your teen.

When to get urgent help

Video therapy is not an emergency service. If your teen talks about suicide, has hurt themselves or you fear for their safety, call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or call 911. Los Angeles County’s Department of Mental Health 24/7 help line is 1-800-854-7771.

Questions parents ask

Do you have an office in Pasadena?

No. Our only office is at 12326 Venice Blvd in Mar Vista, West Los Angeles, about 20 miles from central Pasadena in a straight line. Most San Gabriel Valley families see us by secure video.

Can my teen do sessions after school by video?

Our hours are Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM. Without the drive across Los Angeles, late afternoon times inside those hours are often realistic for teens who get home from school in time.

How are parents involved?

Family sessions and parent-only sessions can be by secure video, and each parent can join from a different place in California, including from work. Parents can also have therapy of their own by video.

My teen is stressed about grades and college. Do you help with that?

Yes. Academic pressure, anxiety and burnout are common reasons high schoolers come to us. Therapy is one-on-one, using approaches such as CBT, ACT and DBT skills, with family sessions for parents.

Is psychiatry available?

Psychiatric care can be arranged if your teen needs it. We explain how when you call.
