Online Therapy for Tech Workers in the Bay Area

Blackburn Clinical Services offers one-on-one online therapy for Bay Area tech workers by secure video for clients located in California, plus the Concierge Outpatient Program, an alternative to IOP, when weekly sessions are not enough. Our only office is in Los Angeles; we do not have an office in the Bay Area, and care is by secure video. Psychiatric care can be arranged. Call (888) 870 7405 or email info@blackburnclinical.com.

Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM. Video therapy for tech workers from San Francisco to San Jose.

What do Bay Area tech workers bring to therapy?

The work itself is rarely the whole story. Tech workers in San Francisco, on the Peninsula, in the South Bay and across the East Bay who start therapy often describe a combination: long stretches of high output, a job market that has felt unstable for several years, and a life outside work that has slowly shrunk to fit around it.

Job insecurity is now a common source of stress well beyond tech. In the American Psychological Association’s 2025 Work in America survey, 54 percent of employed adults said job insecurity has a significant impact on their stress, and 44 percent worried that an economic slump could lead to layoffs at their workplace within a year, up from 36 percent in 2024 (APA). For people in an industry where reorganizations arrive by calendar invite, those numbers will feel familiar.

How do burnout, layoffs and on-call culture show up?

PressureWhat it can look likeWhere one-on-one therapy can help
Burnout after a long pushCynicism about work you used to care about, exhaustion that a weekend does not fix, trouble concentratingSorting burnout from depression, rebuilding boundaries, deciding what to change
A layoff, or waiting for oneChecking messages at 2 AM, rehearsing worst cases, shame about being cut, pressure to land the next role fastWorking through loss and identity, managing anxiety during a search
On-call rotationsBroken sleep, a body that stays on alert after the pager is quiet, irritability at homeSleep and stress routines, recovery time, talking it through with a partner
Survivor’s loadDoing two people’s work after cuts, guilt toward colleagues who left, fear of being nextSetting limits you can defend, handling guilt and resentment
Coping that has crept upMore drinking to come down after launches, relying on substances to sleep or to focusLooking honestly at the pattern, with more support if needed

None of these is a diagnosis. They are patterns people describe, and an assessment helps sort out what is going on, whether that is anxiety, depression, substance use, or several of these together.

Why does video therapy suit tech schedules?

Commutes on the 101, the 280, Caltrain or BART can turn a one-hour appointment into a half day, and hybrid schedules mean the office is not always where you are. Video sessions happen from a private room at home, a parked car or a booked conference room, as long as you are located in California during the session. You can keep the same therapist if you move from Oakland to Mountain View, or from the city to Sacramento.

Our hours are Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, and some Saturday therapy appointments are available. If your on-call weeks are predictable, tell us on the first call and we will plan sessions around them.

What if weekly therapy is not enough?

Some people need more than one session a week for a while: after a layoff that set off a depressive episode, during a stretch of heavy drinking, or after stepping down from residential treatment. The Concierge Outpatient Program adds focused one-on-one care, typically 3 to 5 hours a week, with no groups and no hour requirements. By video it can include individual therapy, family sessions, psychoeducation, and coaching and case management. It is an alternative to IOP rather than an IOP, and the hours come down as things steady. See the virtual outpatient program page and our page on virtual outpatient care for professionals.

What is not available by video?

Psychiatric care can be arranged; we explain how when you call. Brainspotting, TMS and neuropsychological testing take place only at our Los Angeles office, so they are not part of video care for Bay Area clients.

Where else can Bay Area residents find help?

County behavioral health systems run access lines that screen and refer residents who have Medi-Cal or no insurance, and they are worth knowing about whether or not you work with us:

  • San Francisco: the Behavioral Health Access Center line, 888-246-3333, is available 24/7 for mental health and substance use information (SF.gov).
  • San Mateo County: the BHRS ACCESS Call Center, (800) 686-0101, for residents with Medi-Cal or no insurance (San Mateo County Health).
  • Santa Clara County: the Behavioral Health Services Call Center is open 24/7; callers with a local number dial 988, and others call (800) 704-0900 (Santa Clara County Behavioral Health Services).

Many tech employers also offer an employee assistance program or a benefits platform with a set number of sessions. Those can be a good start. Private therapy is an option when you want a longer-term relationship with one clinician or more focused care than a short session package allows.

How does payment work?

We are an out-of-network practice. We do not take or bill insurance, and we provide superbills for reimbursable services so you can submit them to your plan. See fees and insurance and the private pay therapy guide. Fees are discussed by phone.

Questions from Bay Area tech workers

Do you have an office in the Bay Area?

No. Our only office is at 12326 Venice Blvd in Los Angeles. Bay Area clients work with us by secure video.

Can I do therapy by video from anywhere in the Bay Area?

Yes. Therapy by secure video is available to clients located in California, so San Francisco, Oakland, the Peninsula, San Jose and everywhere in between are covered.

Can you help after a layoff?

Yes. Therapy can help with the anxiety, loss and self-doubt that often follow a layoff, and with the practical routines that keep a long search going.

Is burnout something you treat?

Yes, we work with burnout. The first step is an assessment, because exhaustion and loss of motivation can also be signs of depression, anxiety or substance use, and the plan depends on what is going on.

Can sessions fit around on-call weeks?

Usually, yes. Sessions are booked with you within our hours, Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, with some Saturday therapy appointments. Tell us your rotation and we will plan around it.

Is psychiatric care available?

Psychiatric care can be arranged and coordinated with your therapist. We explain how when you call.
