Starting by video, or getting here from Downey

By video: most Downey clients start online. Nurses, techs and other hospital staff can meet on a day off or around a shift, and parents can join from a break room at work, all without crossing the county.

By car: the I-105 runs west from Downey toward LAX, where the I-405 north leads to the Westside; the I-5 or I-605 to the I-10 west is the other option. Weekday traffic varies a lot, so try your session hour once before committing to the office.

By transit: Metro rail into downtown Los Angeles and then the E Line west is possible but long. Check Metro’s maps and schedules for current service.

Downey: local context and resources

Downey is one of the larger Gateway Cities, with 114,355 residents in the 2020 Census (U.S. Census Bureau data via LA Almanac). For county mental health programs it falls in the LA County Department of Mental Health’s Service Area 7, alongside Bellflower, Norwalk, South Gate, Pico Rivera and Santa Fe Springs (LA County DMH). The county’s Get Help page lists the 24/7 Help Line and 211 for free and low-cost options.

The city has a long aerospace history and is home to regional medical centers, so many residents work in health care, often on long or rotating shifts. Caring for others all day can leave little room for your own stress, and some people come to us with burnout, trauma from difficult work, or depression that crept up quietly. Some Downey students are also the first in their family to go to college; our page on therapy for first-generation college students and their families speaks to that experience.

Who we help in Downey

  • Health care workers facing burnout, sleep problems or hard memories from work.
  • First-generation college students and their parents. When clinically appropriate, we write letters for a college leave of absence or return. See therapy for college students.
  • Adults with anxiety, panic or constant worry.
  • Parents of teens who want guidance through parent-only or family sessions.
  • Families coordinating with a trustee. With written permission, we share attendance and general progress.

In the office or by video: which fits you

For a Downey resident, video usually wins: no I-105 traffic, and you can fit a session around a shift. The office is the right call for Brainspotting, which is office only, for people who focus better in person, or for anyone already heading to the Westside. Many people start on video and decide later.

Questions from Downey residents

Do you have an office in Downey?

No. Our one office is at 12326 Venice Blvd in Mar Vista, about 18 miles from central Downey in a straight line. Most Downey clients meet with us by secure video.

I work long hospital shifts in Downey. How would therapy fit?

Sessions are Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM. Video lets you meet on a day off or before a shift from home, with no commute.

I am the first in my family to go to college. Can therapy help with that pressure?

Yes. We work with first-generation students on stress, guilt, homesickness and the gap between home and campus, and parents can join family sessions if the student wants.

Can you see a Downey teen?

Yes. Teens are seen individually, with family and parent-only sessions available, and either parent can consent. Our online teen therapy in California page explains the video option.
