Starting by video, or getting here from Whittier

By video: almost all Whittier clients begin this way. A student can log on from a quiet room near campus, and a parent in the hills above Uptown can join from home, with no trip across the basin.

By car: one route is the I-605 south to the I-105 west and then the I-405 north; another is the I-605 or I-5 to the I-10 west. Either way you cross most of Los Angeles, so test the drive at your session time before choosing the office.

By transit: Metro rail into downtown Los Angeles followed by the E Line west is possible but involves several legs. Check Metro’s maps and schedules first.

Whittier: local context and resources

Whittier had 87,306 residents in the 2020 Census (U.S. Census Bureau data via LA Almanac). The LA County Department of Mental Health groups it in Service Area 7 with nearby communities such as Los Nietos, La Habra Heights, Pico Rivera and Santa Fe Springs, which is where county clinics and programs for Whittier residents are organized (LA County DMH). 211 LA County can help you find free and low-cost services nearby.

Whittier is a historic city at the foot of the Puente Hills, with an older Uptown district, mostly residential neighborhoods and a small private college. That mix shapes what people here may bring to therapy: college students who are far from family or struggling with a semester, and longtime residents dealing with life changes such as a divorce, a death in the family or adult children moving home. Our pages on grief counseling and relationship counseling go deeper on both.

Who we help in Whittier

  • College students, whether at the local campus or home from school elsewhere. When clinically appropriate, we provide leave of absence and return letters. See therapy for college students.
  • Parents of struggling young adults. See help for parents of a struggling college student.
  • Adults facing grief, divorce or depression.
  • Teens and their families through individual, family or parent-only sessions.
  • Families working with a trustee. With written permission, we can share attendance and general progress.

In the office or by video: which fits you

Given the distance, video is the realistic weekly option for most Whittier residents, students and working parents included. The Mar Vista office is there for Brainspotting, which we offer only in person, for people who would rather sit in a room, and for anyone with regular reasons to be on the Westside.
