Grief Counseling in Los Angeles

Blackburn Clinical Services offers grief counseling for adults, adolescents and families in Venice, Mar Vista, Santa Monica, Culver City and West Los Angeles.

Grief is a natural response to loss, and there is no right way or timeline to go through it. Sometimes, though, grief becomes overwhelming or stays stuck. Counseling offers a steady place to process the loss and find a way forward.

When grief counseling can help

  • The death of a partner, parent, child, friend or pet
  • Sudden or traumatic loss, including loss to overdose or suicide
  • Grief that makes it hard to work, sleep or care for yourself months later
  • Guilt, anger or numbness that will not ease
  • Grief that has turned into depression, anxiety or increased drinking or drug use
  • Other major losses, such as divorce, a diagnosis or the end of a career

How we help

  • Individual grief counseling. Therapy at our office that makes space for the loss and helps you cope day to day.
  • Family support. Family sessions for households grieving together, including help for children and teens through our adolescent services.
  • Psychiatry when needed. If grief has developed into depression, anxiety or trouble sleeping, psychiatric care can help.
  • Substance use support. Addiction psychiatry when grief and alcohol or drug use are connected.

What to expect

  1. Initial consultation. We learn about your loss and what you are going through.
  2. Matching. We connect you with a therapist who fits your needs.
  3. Counseling sessions. Regular sessions at a pace that feels right for you.
  4. Additional support. Psychiatry or family sessions if they would help.

Frequently asked questions

Is what I am feeling normal?

Grief can bring sadness, anger, guilt, numbness, trouble sleeping and difficulty concentrating. All of these are common. Counseling can help when these feelings are overwhelming or are not easing over time.

How long does grief last?

There is no set timeline. For many people the intensity eases gradually. When grief stays intense and disruptive for a long time, it may be prolonged grief, which responds well to treatment.

Do you help with grief after an overdose or suicide?

Yes. Loss to overdose or suicide can bring added layers of trauma, guilt and stigma. Our therapists can help you work through these experiences.

Can children and teens get grief counseling?

Yes. We work with young people and their families. Learn more about our adolescent services.
