Long Beach to West LA on a weekday
The usual route from Long Beach is the I-405 north past the I-710 and the South Bay to LAX, a corridor shared with port and airport traffic at nearly every hour. Families who have done that drive know it is hard to predict. Many Long Beach teens already spend real time getting to school, especially at private and Catholic high schools that draw from across the city and neighboring towns. Adding a weekly trip to the Westside is often the thing that makes therapy fall apart. By video, your teen joins from home after school inside our weekday hours.
Fitting therapy around the school calendar
Long Beach Unified sets its own calendar, and private, independent and Catholic high schools in and around the city often run on different calendars, with their own breaks and finals weeks. Families with one teen in a public school and another in a private one may be tracking two schedules. A weekly video time stays the same through finals, AP exams in May (College Board) and the weeks before winter break.
What we hear from parents of high schoolers here
Long Beach is a big, varied city, and parents describe a wide range of things: teens with long school commutes who come home exhausted, students in demanding college prep or magnet-style programs, athletes, and teens struggling with friendships and social media. We also hear from parents whose teen is pulling away, sleeping all day, or using cannabis or vaping to cope. See teen depression signs parents miss and social media, phones and teen anxiety.
What video therapy looks like at Blackburn
Your teen joins a one-on-one session from a private room on a phone, tablet or computer. Approaches such as CBT, ACT and DBT skills are chosen for your teen; EMDR and Brainspotting are offered in our office, not by video. Family sessions and parent-only sessions happen by video too, so both parents can join from work or home. Use headphones, a closed door and a personal device rather than a school-issued laptop. Our online teen therapy guide covers privacy at home and when in-office care is the better choice.
What parents can do now
- Notice patterns, not single bad days: sleep, appetite, friendships, grades or activities that change for more than a couple of weeks.
- Use local public resources too. Long Beach runs its own city Department of Health and Human Services, and county mental health services are organized by the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health by service area (LA County DMH).
- Call us to talk through what you are seeing and whether video is a good fit for your teen.
When to get urgent help
Video therapy is not an emergency service. If your teen talks about suicide, has hurt themselves or you fear for their safety, call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or call 911. Los Angeles County’s Department of Mental Health 24/7 help line is 1-800-854-7771.
