Teen Therapy for South Bay Families

Blackburn Clinical Services offers therapy in our office or by secure video (for clients located in California) for teens ages 13 to 17 from Manhattan Beach, Torrance, Palos Verdes and the rest of the South Bay, with family sessions so parents are part of the work. Our office is at 12326 Venice Blvd in Mar Vista, West Los Angeles, about 8 to 9 miles north of Manhattan Beach in a straight line and farther from Torrance and the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Sessions are in our office or by secure video for clients located in California, Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, and we help you choose a time that fits your teen’s school day.

At a glance for South Bay families

  • Who we see: high school age teens, 13 to 17, from private and independent, Catholic and public high schools, and their parents.
  • Where: one office, at 12326 Venice Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90066. We do not have a South Bay location.
  • How far (straight line): about 8 to 9 miles from central Manhattan Beach, about 13 miles from central Torrance, and about 14 to 16 miles from the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
  • When: Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, with flexible scheduling inside those hours.
  • Parents: family sessions alongside your teen’s individual therapy.
  • Psychiatry: psychiatric care can be arranged if your teen needs it; we explain how when you call.

Getting here from the South Bay

  • By car: most families come north on the I-405 past LAX toward Venice Blvd. Sepulveda Blvd, which runs north through El Segundo, under the LAX runways and through Westchester, and Lincoln Blvd are the usual surface alternatives. Traffic around LAX can be heavy at any hour, so we do not quote a drive time; try the trip once at the time you are considering.
  • From Torrance and Palos Verdes: the trip is longer. Weekly sessions can still work for many families, but it is worth being honest with yourself about the drive before committing.
  • By transit: the Metro C and K Lines connect at the LAX/Metro Transit Center, where Culver CityBus Line 6 heads north on Sepulveda Blvd (Culver CityBus). Sepulveda crosses Venice Blvd, and Metro Line 33 runs west along Venice Blvd to our office. It works, but it takes a while.

Closer therapist or our office? How to decide

For some South Bay families a therapist nearer home is the right answer, and we will tell you if we think so. Families tend to choose our office when they want several things in one place:

  • Teen therapy and family sessions with the same practice, so the work with your teen and the work with you stay connected.
  • Testing under the same roof: ADHD testing and neuropsychological testing in our office, when attention or learning questions are part of the picture.
  • A step up without a program schedule: our Concierge Outpatient Program offers typically 3 to 5 hours a week of one-on-one therapy for adolescents, with no groups and no fixed hour requirements, as an individualized alternative to traditional IOP.
  • Substance use and mental health together, for a teen whose vaping, drinking or cannabis use is tangled up with anxiety or low mood. See dual diagnosis treatment.

Anxiety is the most common reason teens need help

The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that 31.9 percent of adolescents ages 13 to 18 have had an anxiety disorder at some point, with higher rates among girls (38.0 percent) than boys (26.1 percent) (NIMH). In high school it can look like stomachaches before school, refusing to go, all-night studying, panic before games or performances, or a teen who stops trying because failing feels safer than trying. See anxiety treatment.

Therapy for teen anxiety at our office is one-on-one and practical: approaches such as CBT, ACT and DBT skills, chosen for your teen, with family sessions so parents know how to support facing fears instead of accidentally feeding avoidance.

What parents can do now

  • Notice patterns, not single bad days: changes in sleep, eating, friends, grades or activities that last more than a couple of weeks.
  • Use what is close by, too. Beach Cities Health District, a public health district serving Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach, has operated a youth wellness center for ages 12 to 25 in Redondo Beach (BCHD); check the district’s site for current services and hours. County services for the area are run by the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health as Service Area 8, South Bay (LA County DMH).
  • Call us to talk through what you are seeing and whether the drive makes sense for your family.

When to get urgent help

If your teen talks about suicide, has hurt themselves or you fear for their safety, call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or call 911. Los Angeles County’s Department of Mental Health 24/7 help line is 1-800-854-7771.

Questions parents ask

Do you have an office in the South Bay?

No. Our office is at 12326 Venice Blvd in Mar Vista, West Los Angeles, about 8 to 9 miles north of Manhattan Beach in a straight line. Therapy by secure video for clients located in California is also available.

Is the drive from Palos Verdes or Torrance realistic every week?

For many families it is, with a fixed weekly time. It is a longer trip, roughly 13 to 16 miles in a straight line, and traffic near LAX varies a lot. Try the drive once at the time you are considering, and call us to talk it through honestly. Therapy by secure video for clients located in California is also an option.

My teen has anxiety. Is that something you treat?

Yes. Anxiety is one of the most common reasons teens need help. Therapy is one-on-one in our office, using approaches such as CBT, ACT and DBT skills, with family sessions for parents.

Can my teen get ADHD testing at the same place?

Yes. ADHD testing and neuropsychological testing take place in our office, which helps when attention or learning questions are part of what is going on.

What if weekly therapy is not enough?

Our Concierge Outpatient Program offers typically 3 to 5 hours a week of one-on-one therapy for adolescents, with no groups, as an individualized alternative to traditional IOP. It begins with a biopsychosocial assessment.
