Services for Lakewood residents

  • Individual therapy: your therapist draws on CBT, DBT, ACT or EMDR as they fit. Brainspotting is offered in the Mar Vista office only.
  • Psychiatric care: psychiatric care and medication management can be arranged in step with your therapy.
  • Teens and families: one-on-one teen work, family sessions and sessions just for parents. Consent from either parent is enough, and seniors who are already 18 can be seen. Lakewood parents of high schoolers can read about online teen therapy for Long Beach area families, which covers Lakewood too.
  • Career coaching: for young adults figuring out school or work, people in recovery and anyone stuck after a setback. Coaching is offered by video or at our Mar Vista office and can be combined with therapy.
  • Concierge Outpatient Program: an individual alternative to IOP with no group sessions, usually 3 to 5 hours weekly. A teen typically stays enrolled in school because sessions sit inside weekday hours, and some Saturday therapy appointments are available.

Starting by video, or getting here from Lakewood

By video: this is how most Lakewood clients start. You can join from a bedroom, a home office or your car during a lunch break, as long as you are somewhere private. It keeps therapy close to home in a city where family life tends to stay close to home too.

By car: drivers usually take the I-605 to the I-105 west and then the I-405 north, or the I-5 or I-605 up to the I-10 west. Both cut across the county, so try the drive once at your intended hour before booking regular office sessions.

By transit: Metro rail can take you into downtown Los Angeles, where the E Line heads west toward Culver City. It is a long trip with transfers; check Metro’s maps and schedules first.

Lakewood: local context and resources

Lakewood counted 82,496 residents in the 2020 Census (U.S. Census Bureau data via LA Almanac). One detail surprises people: although Lakewood borders Long Beach, the county Department of Mental Health places it in Service Area 7, with Bellflower, Cerritos, Downey, Norwalk and Whittier, while Long Beach is in Service Area 8 (LA County DMH). If you are looking for county clinics, search under Service Area 7. For any public program in the county, 211 LA County can point you to free or low-cost help by phone.

Lakewood was built after World War II as a planned suburb of single-family homes, and many households are working and middle-income families with deep roots on their street. That closeness is a strength, and it can also make it hard to talk about depression, anxiety or grief when everyone knows everyone. A therapist outside the neighborhood, reached by video from home, gives some people the privacy they want.

Who we help in Lakewood

  • Parents juggling work and kids who want parent-only sessions or help with a teen at home.
  • Adults caring for aging parents or coping with a loss in the family.
  • Young adults living at home or away at college. When clinically appropriate, we provide letters for a leave of absence or a return. See therapy for college students.
  • People whose substance use and mental health overlap. See dual diagnosis treatment.
  • Families with a trustee involved. With written permission, a trustee can receive attendance and general progress.

In the office or by video: which fits you

Video suits most Lakewood residents: no freeway, sessions from home, and a parent can join from work. Come to Mar Vista if you want Brainspotting, which we provide only in the office, if you simply prefer meeting face to face, or if you already spend time on the Westside. Mixing the two is fine.

Questions from Lakewood residents

Do you have an office in Lakewood?

No. We have one office, at 12326 Venice Blvd in Mar Vista, about 21 miles from central Lakewood in a straight line. Most Lakewood clients see us by secure video.

Lakewood is next to Long Beach. Which county service area am I in?

The LA County Department of Mental Health lists Lakewood in Service Area 7, not Service Area 8 with Long Beach. That matters only for county programs; our private therapy is the same wherever you live in California.

Can I keep therapy private from neighbors and family?

Video sessions happen wherever you choose, so no one sees you walk into an office. You decide who at home knows, and we talk through privacy at the first session.

Do you see Lakewood teens?

Yes. We see teens individually and offer family and parent-only sessions; either parent can consent. Our online teen therapy page for Long Beach area families covers how it works.

How do Lakewood residents get psychiatric care?

Psychiatric care and medication management can be arranged together with your therapist. We explain the process when you call.
