Therapy for Malibu Residents

Malibu residents can see a Blackburn Clinical Services therapist one-on-one by secure video from anywhere in California, or travel down the coast to our office at 12326 Venice Blvd in Mar Vista, about 15 miles from central Malibu in a straight line. We see adults, young adults, teens and families. Psychiatric care and medication management can be arranged, and starting does not require a diagnosis or a referral. Therapy for Malibu residents at a glance

  • How: private one-on-one sessions by secure video, or in person at 12326 Venice Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90066. We do not have a Malibu office.
  • How far (straight line): about 15 miles from central Malibu to Mar Vista. Malibu stretches far along the coast, so homes in western Malibu are farther still.
  • When: Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM.
  • Who we see: adults, young adults, teens and families, plus parents who want sessions on their own.
  • Starting: no diagnosis or referral needed. One call sets up an assessment.
  • Psychiatry: psychiatric care and medication management can be arranged for Malibu clients; we explain how when you call.

Services for Malibu residents

  • Individual therapy: your therapist draws on approaches such as CBT, DBT, ACT and EMDR, picked to suit you. Brainspotting happens only in our Mar Vista office.
  • Psychiatric care: psychiatric care and medication management can be arranged and kept in step with your therapy.
  • Teens and families: teen therapy, family sessions and parent-only sessions. Either parent can consent for a teen, and 18 year old high school seniors can be seen. Families can also read about teen therapy on the Westside and online teen therapy in California.
  • Career coaching: for young adults, people in recovery and anyone stuck on school, work or independence. Career coaching is available by video or at our Mar Vista office, alone or alongside therapy.
  • Concierge Outpatient Program: a one-on-one alternative to IOP with no groups, typically 3 to 5 hours a week. Teens typically keep going to school with sessions inside weekday hours, and some Saturday therapy appointments are available.

Starting by video, or getting here from Malibu

By video: this is how most Malibu clients begin. A session happens from a quiet room at home, a parked car or an office, so a canyon road closure or a slow afternoon on the coast does not cost you the appointment. Video also travels with you: if you are staying with family or in temporary housing, your sessions continue.

By car: most people take Pacific Coast Highway (SR-1) southeast toward Santa Monica, then the I-10 east or Lincoln Blvd south to Venice Blvd. Conditions on the coast road change with weather, repairs and rebuilding, so check before you leave.

By transit: Metro buses run along the coast, and Metro Line 33 runs on Venice Blvd. Combining them is possible but slow; plan the trip with Metro’s maps and schedules.

Malibu: local context and resources

Malibu is a small city stretched along the coast: the 2020 Census counted 10,654 residents (U.S. Census Bureau, via LA Almanac). For county mental health services it belongs to Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health Service Area 5, the West area that also covers Santa Monica and the Westside (LA County DMH; LA Almanac). That matters when you look for free or low-cost public services: county programs for Malibu are organized under the West area, not the San Fernando Valley area that begins over the hills in Calabasas.

The January 2025 Palisades Fire reached into Malibu. The City of Malibu reported that CAL FIRE confirmed 6,831 structures destroyed and 973 damaged across the Palisades and Malibu burn area (City of Malibu). In January 2026 the county Department of Mental Health said its fire counseling, including a Palisades Fire walk-in center, would continue through June 2026 (LA County DMH news release); check with the department for what runs now. Rebuilding stretches over years, and permits, adjuster calls and life in a rental can wear people down long after the smoke clears. Private therapy can sit beside county help for the grief, trauma and sleeplessness that often follow.

Who we help in Malibu

  • Adults rebuilding after the fires, whether they lost a home, a business or a neighborhood, and those helping others through it.
  • People with depression or anxiety that can deepen when life is quiet, isolated or unsettled.
  • College students back in Malibu between terms or taking time off. When clinically appropriate we write leave of absence and return letters. See therapy for college students.
  • Parents of teens through parent-only sessions or family sessions.
  • Families working with a trustee. With your written permission, we share attendance and general progress with the trustee, and nothing more.

In the office or by video: which fits you

For most Malibu households video is the practical choice for weekly therapy: no coast highway, no parking, and sessions that keep going if you are living somewhere else for a while. The Mar Vista office suits people who want Brainspotting, which we offer only in person, and people already heading to Santa Monica or the Westside on a regular basis. Career coaching works either way. Plenty of clients mix the two.

Questions from Malibu residents

Do you have an office in Malibu?

No. Our only office is at 12326 Venice Blvd in Mar Vista, about 15 miles from central Malibu in a straight line, and most Malibu clients see us by secure video.

We are living outside Malibu while our home is rebuilt. Can therapy continue?

Yes. Therapy by secure video works for clients located anywhere in California, so a move to a rental in another town does not interrupt your sessions.

Can you help with stress from the Palisades Fire?

Yes. We work with adults, teens and families facing loss, displacement, grief and anxiety after the fire. The county Department of Mental Health has also offered free fire counseling, so check with them for what is available now.

Our teen goes to school in Malibu. Can you see them?

Yes. We see teens one-on-one by video or in Mar Vista, with family and parent-only sessions, and either parent can consent. Our teen therapy on the Westside page explains the details.

Is career coaching an option from Malibu?

Yes. Career coaching is available by video or at our Mar Vista office, and it can stand on its own or be combined with therapy.
