Santa Monica at a glance, and why it shapes care

Santa Monica had 93,076 residents in the 2020 Census. It is a city of renters: only about 28 percent of homes are owner occupied. Nearly 1 in 5 residents is 65 or older, while fewer than 14 percent are under 18 (U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts). Public schools are run by the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District, which serves both cities.

That mix shapes what people in Santa Monica tend to need. Adults later in life may be looking for help with grief, depression or support through a major transition such as retirement, a move or caring for a partner. Working adults may be dealing with anxiety, burnout or relationship issues. And Santa Monica-Malibu families may want help for a teen, often alongside ADHD or neuropsychological testing that can inform school planning.

Help for Santa Monica residents

  • Life transitions and loss: grief, retirement, caregiving and other changes that unsettle mood and routine.
  • Anxiety, depression and burnout: anxiety and depression that has started to affect work, sleep or relationships.
  • Trauma: trauma and PTSD, with EMDR and other trauma-informed approaches.
  • Teens: individual therapy with parents involved through our adolescent services.

What therapy in our office looks like

Most people start with weekly or every other week sessions. Our office is a private outpatient practice on Venice Blvd, away from the busiest parts of the beach cities.

  • It starts with an assessment. Your first visit is a conversation about what brings you in, your history and your goals. It becomes the basis for a plan written for one person.
  • Sessions are one-on-one. You meet with the same licensed therapist in a private office, not a group room. Approaches are chosen to fit you, for example CBT for patterns of worry, DBT skills for intense emotions, or EMDR for trauma. NIMH explains these psychotherapies if you want to read more.
  • Families can be involved when that helps. For teens, parents are part of the work through our family services. For adults, anyone else is involved only with your written permission.
  • More support is available without a program schedule. If weekly therapy is not enough, the Concierge Outpatient Program offers 3 to 5 hours a week of one-on-one care with no groups and no hour requirements.

Our office hours are Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM. When you call, tell us what times work for you and we will look for a therapist whose schedule fits.

How psychiatry is arranged

Some people who start therapy also want an opinion on medication, or already take medication and want one team managing it. Blackburn psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners provide psychiatric evaluations and ongoing medication management, and they coordinate with your therapist so the plan works as one. When you call, our team explains how psychiatric appointments are scheduled and what to expect at the first one. Learn more on our psychiatry page or, if substance use is part of the picture, our addiction psychiatry and dual diagnosis pages.
