Services for Koreatown residents

  • Individual therapy: one-on-one sessions using CBT, DBT, ACT or EMDR. Brainspotting is offered in our office only. Koreatown clients often bring anxiety, depression, family expectations and work pressure.
  • Psychiatric care: psychiatric care and medication management can be arranged. For Koreatown clients it is coordinated with your therapist.
  • Teens and families: therapy for teens, family sessions and parent-only sessions. Either parent can consent for a teen. High school seniors who have turned 18 can be seen too. Koreatown parents of a high schooler can start with teen therapy for Mid-Wilshire, Hancock Park and Los Feliz families, which covers the neighborhoods next door.
  • Career coaching: practical, strengths-based coaching for Koreatown young adults, people in recovery and anyone stuck on school, work or independence, including ADHD and executive functioning challenges. It is available by video or at our Mar Vista office. It suits Koreatown young adults weighing school, work and family expectations.
  • Concierge Outpatient Program: a one-on-one alternative to IOP for Koreatown teens and adults, built around the person and with no groups. It typically runs 3 to 5 hours a week. Teens typically stay in school, with sessions inside weekday hours. Some Saturday therapy appointments are available.

Getting here from Koreatown, or starting by video

By car: from Koreatown most people head south to the I-10 (Santa Monica Fwy) west, or take Venice, Washington or Pico Blvd straight across Mid-City to Mar Vista. Try the trip once at your usual hour before committing to it weekly.

By transit: Metro rail toward downtown and then the E Line west toward Culver City is one route, and Metro Line 33 runs along Venice Blvd near our office. Check Metro’s maps and schedules.

By video: in a dense neighborhood where many people share apartments, finding a private room is the main thing. If you have one, secure video works from anywhere in California.

Koreatown: local context and resources

Koreatown is a very dense City of Los Angeles neighborhood west of downtown, with large Korean American and Latino communities and many renters and young adults. There is no Census population figure for Koreatown. Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health lists both Koreatown and Wilshire Center in Service Area 4 (LA County DMH). In December 2022 the department opened the Koreatown Mental Health Center at 510 S. Vermont Ave, its first directly operated clinic in the neighborhood, staffed by a multicultural team (LA County DMH). It is a public option alongside private therapy.

In Koreatown, therapy questions often sit where generations meet: a young adult balancing their own plans with family expectations, parents who are unsure how to talk about mental health at home, long workweeks, or crowded housing that leaves little privacy. We see people one-on-one and with family, and we work at the pace the client sets.

Who we help in Koreatown

  • Young adults with anxiety, depression or a stalled start. When clinically appropriate, we provide leave of absence and return letters. See therapy for college students.
  • First-generation college students and their families; see therapy for first-generation college students.
  • Parents who want parent-only sessions or family sessions with a teen.
  • Adults with work stress, relationship strain or grief.
  • Families working with a trustee. With written permission, we can share attendance and general progress.

In the office or by video: which fits you

The trip from Koreatown is short enough for weekly office visits, and the office gives privacy that a shared apartment may not. It is also the only place we offer Brainspotting. Video fits Koreatown residents with long workdays or parents joining from work. Career coaching works either way.
