Who calls us from the Monterey Peninsula?
Monterey County had about 436,755 residents on January 1, 2026, with about 27,504 in the city of Monterey and about 3,102 in Carmel-by-the-Sea, according to the California Department of Finance. Those numbers hide very different lives.
On the Peninsula, many clients are retirees, second-home owners and older couples in Carmel, Pebble Beach and Pacific Grove, facing loss, a spouse’s illness, adult children far away, or drinking that crept up in a beautiful but quiet place. Others work the hospitality economy: hotels, restaurants, golf and the big August event weeks, when everyone works double shifts and nobody sleeps. Military families and graduate students cycle through on assignments of a year or two, often far from their own support.
Salinas, the county seat, keeps a different clock from the Peninsula. Produce harvest runs from spring into fall, field and packing-shed shifts start before dawn, and many families have worked the valley for generations. Growers, crew supervisors, truckers and the office staff who keep it all moving tell us the season leaves little room for anything else, including their own health.
Along the coast, Big Sur residents live with Highway 1 closures after storms and slides that can cut them off from the rest of the county for months. Isolation is the common thread, and video is one of the few kinds of care that reaches all of these places.
What public help does Monterey County offer?
The county’s Behavioral Health ACCESS line, 1-888-258-6029, is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in English and Spanish, by representatives who help you find the right service for you or someone you care about (County of Monterey Behavioral Health). People who want private, one-on-one care paid for themselves often call us too.
How do you choose between weekly therapy and the program?
| If this is you | Consider |
|---|---|
| Retired, grieving, still managing day to day | Weekly therapy |
| Drinking more since retirement or a move here | Concierge Outpatient Program |
| Hospitality worker burning out in peak season | Weekly therapy, stepping up if needed |
| Military spouse or student far from family | Weekly therapy by video |
| Home from residential treatment | Concierge Outpatient Program |
The program is an alternative to IOP, built one-on-one, never a group. Read more on our virtual outpatient program page, or about outpatient help for drinking.
Is video practical for older adults and Big Sur residents?
Usually, yes. A tablet or laptop with a camera is enough, and a family member can help set it up the first time. In Big Sur and Carmel Valley, connections vary, and some households rely on satellite or fixed wireless internet. Sit near the router, and test the room you will use before the first session. We meet clients on weekdays between 9 AM and 5 PM, and on some Saturdays for therapy. Each session requires that you are in California at the time, which matters for snowbirds and second-home owners who split the year.
How does payment work?
We are private pay and never bill insurance directly. Reimbursable services come with a superbill you can file for out-of-network benefits. The private pay FAQ and fees and insurance page have details; telehealth therapy in California gives the statewide picture.
