What is changing in Marin, and how does it show up in therapy?
Marin is small and getting smaller. The county had about 250,823 residents on January 1, 2026, down 0.9 percent in a year, according to the California Department of Finance. San Rafael, the county seat, had about 59,890 and Mill Valley about 13,694. Grown children moving away, friends leaving for cheaper states and parents aging in place all come up in session.
The people who call us from Marin tend to fall into a few groups. Commuters who cross the Golden Gate Bridge or take the Larkspur or Sausalito ferry into San Francisco and feel the day bookended by traffic. Retirees and empty nesters working through grief, a late divorce or a drinking habit that grew once the schedule went away. Parents worried about a teen or a twenty-something who came home and has not launched. Families with wealth who want discretion; with written permission we can give a trustee attendance and general progress updates, as described on our page for trustees.
North Marin has its own commute. Novato households often drive the 101 toward Santa Rosa or San Francisco, and the SMART train now links Larkspur, San Rafael and Novato with Sonoma County. Long days on either line leave little room for a midweek appointment, so many Novato clients prefer an early video session before they leave home, or one from a quiet corner at work.
Fire season is part of life here too. Red flag days, evacuation warnings and planned power shutoffs strain sleep and nerves, especially in the hills above Mill Valley, Fairfax and San Anselmo.
Where does Marin County’s public Access Line fit?
Marin County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services runs an Access Line at 888-818-1115, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for information, screening, assessment and referrals for mental health or substance use services (Marin County HHS). County services focus mainly on Medi-Cal members. If you are paying privately and want individual attention without a waitlist, that is where we usually fit.

Will video work from West Marin?
Connectivity can be patchy past Fairfax and along Highway 1 toward Stinson, Bolinas and Point Reyes Station. Test your connection from the exact room you plan to use, sit close to the router, and keep a phone handy in case a call drops. If a vacation or a visit to family takes you out of state, we reschedule, because sessions require that you are in California at the time.
How does private pay work?
We do not bill insurance. If your plan has out-of-network benefits, the superbills we provide for reimbursable services can be submitted for possible reimbursement. See the private pay FAQ and fees and insurance.
