Palms at a glance, and why it shapes care

Palms is one of the four neighborhoods in the City of Los Angeles’ Palms-Mar Vista-Del Rey Community Plan, alongside Mar Vista, Del Rey and Playa Vista (Los Angeles City Planning). Our office sits inside that same plan area, so for Palms residents we are a neighborhood practice in the most literal sense. Palms is also on the Metro E Line, with its own station.

For the many young adults who live and rent in neighborhoods like Palms, timing matters: young adulthood is when mental health needs peak. In 2022, 36.2 percent of U.S. adults ages 18 to 25 had a mental illness, the highest rate of any adult age group, compared with 23.1 percent of all adults (National Institute of Mental Health). If you are in that window, or just past it, you may recognize anxiety, depression, ADHD that is getting in the way at work, or drinking and drug use that has started to worry you.

Help for Palms residents

What therapy in our office looks like

If you live in Palms, sessions can fit around a workday. Because we are close, a session plus travel usually takes far less time than crossing town to an office on the far side of the Westside.

  • It starts with an assessment. Your first visit is a conversation about what brings you in, your history and your goals. It becomes the basis for a plan written for one person.
  • Sessions are one-on-one. You meet with the same licensed therapist in a private office, not a group room. Approaches are chosen to fit you, for example CBT for patterns of worry, DBT skills for intense emotions, or EMDR for trauma. NIMH explains these psychotherapies if you want to read more.
  • Families can be involved when that helps. For teens, parents are part of the work through our family services. For adults, anyone else is involved only with your written permission.
  • More support is available without a program schedule. If weekly therapy is not enough, the Concierge Outpatient Program offers 3 to 5 hours a week of one-on-one care with no groups and no hour requirements.

Our office hours are Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM. When you call, tell us what times work for you and we will look for a therapist whose schedule fits.

How psychiatry is arranged

Some people who start therapy also want an opinion on medication, or already take medication and want one team managing it. Blackburn psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners provide psychiatric evaluations and ongoing medication management, and they coordinate with your therapist so the plan works as one. When you call, our team explains how psychiatric appointments are scheduled and what to expect at the first one. Learn more on our psychiatry page or, if substance use is part of the picture, our addiction psychiatry and dual diagnosis pages.

Getting here from Palms

By car: most trips are a short drive south and west to Venice Blvd. Call before your first visit and we will walk you through parking and the entrance.

By transit: from the Palms station you can ride the E Line one stop east to Culver City Station and connect to Metro Line 33 west on Venice Blvd. Check Metro’s maps and schedules for current times.

Parents of a high schooler in Palms can also read therapy for private school students, with guides on anxiety, school stress and the college process.

Other areas we serve

Our office also serves people from Culver City, Playa Vista, Marina del Rey, Santa Monica, Westchester, Westwood, Brentwood, Beverly Hills and Venice and Mar Vista. See every neighborhood, with distances, on our Areas We Serve page.

Nearby cities: we also have pages for Mid City, Ladera Heights and View Park, West Hollywood and Koreatown.

Questions

Is your office close to Palms?

Yes. We are at 12326 Venice Blvd in Mar Vista, about 2.5 miles southwest of the Palms Metro station in a straight line. Palms and Mar Vista are part of the same city community plan area.

Do you work with young adults in their twenties?

Yes. Our therapists work with young adults dealing with anxiety, depression, ADHD, substance use and the pressure of starting a career. If a parent wants to be involved, that happens only with your written permission.

Can therapy help if I am not sure my drinking is a problem?

Yes. You do not need a label to start. A therapist can help you look honestly at how alcohol or drugs fit into your life, and our dual diagnosis care treats substance use and mental health together.

Do you take insurance?

We are an out-of-network practice. We do not take or bill insurance, and we provide superbills so you can seek out-of-network reimbursement. See Fees and Insurance.

Can I see a psychiatrist as well as a therapist?

Yes. Our psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners provide evaluations and medication management, coordinated with your therapist. When you call, we explain how psychiatric appointments are scheduled.
