Westwood at a glance, and why it shapes care

Westwood is home to a large public university campus within the University of California system, so a big share of the neighborhood is students and young adults, along with faculty, staff and long-time families. It is also getting a subway: Metro’s D Line extension opened its first section to Beverly Hills in May 2026, and a station at Westwood/VA Hospital is planned for 2027 (D Line Extension).

The age mix matters. In 2022, 36.2 percent of U.S. adults ages 18 to 25 had a mental illness, the highest of any adult age group (National Institute of Mental Health). Many serious conditions, including bipolar disorder and psychosis, often first appear in the late teens and twenties, and early, coordinated care makes a difference (NIMH on schizophrenia, NIMH on bipolar disorder). Some students want a therapist off campus for privacy or continuity over breaks; some parents are looking for help for an adult child who is struggling at school.

Help for Westwood residents

What therapy in our office looks like

Students and young adults usually start with weekly sessions. If you are an adult student and want a parent involved, that happens only with your written permission.

  • It starts with an assessment. Your first visit is a conversation about what brings you in, your history and your goals. It becomes the basis for a plan written for one person.
  • Sessions are one-on-one. You meet with the same licensed therapist in a private office, not a group room. Approaches are chosen to fit you, for example CBT for patterns of worry, DBT skills for intense emotions, or EMDR for trauma. NIMH explains these psychotherapies if you want to read more.
  • Families can be involved when that helps. For teens, parents are part of the work through our family services. For adults, anyone else is involved only with your written permission.
  • More support is available without a program schedule. If weekly therapy is not enough, the Concierge Outpatient Program offers 3 to 5 hours a week of one-on-one care with no groups and no hour requirements.

Our office hours are Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM. When you call, tell us what times work for you and we will look for a therapist whose schedule fits.

How psychiatry is arranged

Some people who start therapy also want an opinion on medication, or already take medication and want one team managing it. Blackburn psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners provide psychiatric evaluations and ongoing medication management, and they coordinate with your therapist so the plan works as one. When you call, our team explains how psychiatric appointments are scheduled and what to expect at the first one. Learn more on our psychiatry page or, if substance use is part of the picture, our addiction psychiatry and dual diagnosis pages.
