Marina del Rey at a glance, and why it shapes care

Marina del Rey is an unincorporated community, not part of the City of Los Angeles. Los Angeles County owns and manages the harbor, which is home port to more than 5,000 recreational boats (County of Los Angeles). The 2020 Census counted 11,373 residents, with an average of 1.72 people per household. Nearly all homes are rentals (about 6 percent are owner occupied), about a third of residents moved in within the past year, and the average commute is over 32 minutes (U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts).

Small households, frequent moves and long commutes are a familiar recipe for isolation. You may have relocated for work, be living alone after a breakup or divorce, or have a full calendar and few people you can really talk to. Therapy gives that a place, and helps with the anxiety, depression and drinking that can grow when life is busy and lonely at once.

Help for Marina del Rey residents

What therapy in our office looks like

Most people start with weekly sessions. Being about 2 miles away means you are not adding a second commute on top of the one you already have.

  • It starts with an assessment. Your first visit is a conversation about what brings you in, your history and your goals. It becomes the basis for a plan written for one person.
  • Sessions are one-on-one. You meet with the same licensed therapist in a private office, not a group room. Approaches are chosen to fit you, for example CBT for patterns of worry, DBT skills for intense emotions, or EMDR for trauma. NIMH explains these psychotherapies if you want to read more.
  • Families can be involved when that helps. For teens, parents are part of the work through our family services. For adults, anyone else is involved only with your written permission.
  • More support is available without a program schedule. If weekly therapy is not enough, the Concierge Outpatient Program offers 3 to 5 hours a week of one-on-one care with no groups and no hour requirements.

Our office hours are Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM. When you call, tell us what times work for you and we will look for a therapist whose schedule fits.

How psychiatry is arranged

Some people who start therapy also want an opinion on medication, or already take medication and want one team managing it. Blackburn psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners provide psychiatric evaluations and ongoing medication management, and they coordinate with your therapist so the plan works as one. When you call, our team explains how psychiatric appointments are scheduled and what to expect at the first one. Learn more on our psychiatry page or, if substance use is part of the picture, our addiction psychiatry and dual diagnosis pages.

Questions

How far is your office from Marina del Rey?

About 2 miles northeast of the harbor in a straight line, at 12326 Venice Blvd in Mar Vista.

I just moved here and do not know anyone. Is that a reason to start therapy?

Yes. A big move can bring on low mood, anxiety and isolation even when the move was your choice. Therapy can help you settle, build routines and reconnect.

Can I get help with drinking without going to a program?

Often, yes. Many people start with outpatient therapy, and our dual diagnosis and addiction psychiatry care add more support if it is needed.

Do you take insurance?

We are an out-of-network practice. We do not take or bill insurance, and we provide superbills so you can seek out-of-network reimbursement. See Fees and Insurance.

Can I see a psychiatrist as well as a therapist?

Yes. Our psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners provide evaluations and medication management, coordinated with your therapist. When you call, we explain how psychiatric appointments are scheduled.
