Brentwood at a glance, and why it shapes care

Brentwood is planned together with Pacific Palisades in the City of Los Angeles’ Brentwood-Pacific Palisades Community Plan (Los Angeles City Planning). In January 2025 the Palisades Fire reached the edge of the neighborhood, and mandatory evacuation orders were issued for parts of Brentwood (ABC7 Los Angeles). Because the two neighborhoods sit side by side, many Brentwood residents also have friends, family, schools or work in the Palisades.

The emotional effects of a disaster often outlast the event. Federal health officials note that wildfires affect not only survivors but first responders, eyewitnesses and people who watched the coverage (SAMHSA). Months later people describe trouble sleeping, jumpiness at the smell of smoke or the sound of wind, grief for homes and places that are gone, and the grind of rebuilding. Those are common reactions, and when they persist, trauma-informed therapy can help (NIMH on PTSD).

What therapy in our office looks like

Most people start with weekly sessions. If the fires still affect your housing or schedule, tell us when you call so we can plan sessions around that.

  • It starts with an assessment. Your first visit is a conversation about what brings you in, your history and your goals. It becomes the basis for a plan written for one person.
  • Sessions are one-on-one. You meet with the same licensed therapist in a private office, not a group room. Approaches are chosen to fit you, for example CBT for patterns of worry, DBT skills for intense emotions, or EMDR for trauma. NIMH explains these psychotherapies if you want to read more.
  • Families can be involved when that helps. For teens, parents are part of the work through our family services. For adults, anyone else is involved only with your written permission.
  • More support is available without a program schedule. If weekly therapy is not enough, the Concierge Outpatient Program offers 3 to 5 hours a week of one-on-one care with no groups and no hour requirements.

Our office hours are Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM. When you call, tell us what times work for you and we will look for a therapist whose schedule fits.

How psychiatry is arranged

Some people who start therapy also want an opinion on medication, or already take medication and want one team managing it. Blackburn psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners provide psychiatric evaluations and ongoing medication management, and they coordinate with your therapist so the plan works as one. When you call, our team explains how psychiatric appointments are scheduled and what to expect at the first one. Learn more on our psychiatry page or, if substance use is part of the picture, our addiction psychiatry and dual diagnosis pages.
