What do Los Angeles teens come to therapy for?

Teen distress is common. In the CDC 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 39.7 percent of U.S. high school students reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness in the past year (CDC). The reasons families call us are usually specific:

How does teen therapy work at Blackburn?

It starts with a call. We ask what you are seeing at home and at school, then set up a first appointment. Teens meet one-on-one with a therapist, who chooses approaches such as CBT, DBT skills or ACT to fit the teen; EMDR and Brainspotting are available in our office. Parents are part of the work through family sessions and parent-only sessions, and our page on teen therapy and privacy in California explains what parents are usually told. Read what to expect at a first appointment.

Video or office: which is better for a teen?

Video works well for many teens, especially with long drives and full school days. The office is usually better when there are safety concerns, no private space at home, or a teen who shuts down on a screen. Our guide to teen therapy online or in the office walks through the decision.

What if weekly therapy is not enough?

Some teens need more for a while, after a hospital stay, during a hard semester or when substance use is growing. The Concierge Outpatient Program adds one-on-one care, typically 3 to 5 hours a week, with no groups and no hour requirements, and teens typically stay in school with sessions within weekday hours. It is a one-on-one alternative to IOP, not an IOP. Our guide to levels of care for teens compares weekly therapy, concierge outpatient, IOP and residential care.

How do I choose a therapist for my teen?

Write down what you are seeing, call two or three practices, and ask each the same questions: who would see your teen, how parents are involved, where and when sessions happen, and what happens in a crisis. Our step-by-step guide on how to choose a therapist for your teen in Los Angeles has the full list, and the does my teen need therapy checklist can help you decide whether to call at all. Private school families can read therapy for private school students.

When to get urgent help

If your teen talks about suicide, has hurt themselves or you fear for their safety, call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or call 911. Our office is not a crisis service. Read if your teen talks about self-harm or suicide.
