Culver City at a glance, and why it shapes care

Culver City is its own city, incorporated in 1917 and grown to about 5 square miles through dozens of annexations, with its own school district: Culver City Unified, a K to 12 unified district since 1949 (City of Culver City). The 2020 Census counted 40,779 residents, and about 1 in 5 residents are under 18 (U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts).

Two things follow for therapy. First, with so many families in a small city, help for a teenager is a common need: anxiety, low mood, school avoidance, vaping or a hard family stretch. Our adolescent services and family services are built for that, and our ADHD and neuropsychological testing can give a family and the school team clearer answers. Second, Culver City’s seal still reads “The Heart of Screenland.” People in creative and production work often deal with project to project income, long and irregular days and performance pressure, all of which can feed anxiety, depression and burnout.

Help for Culver City residents

What therapy in our office looks like

For Culver City residents, weekly or every other week sessions in our Mar Vista office are a short trip west on Venice Blvd.

  • It starts with an assessment. Your first visit is a conversation about what brings you in, your history and your goals. It becomes the basis for a plan written for one person.
  • Sessions are one-on-one. You meet with the same licensed therapist in a private office, not a group room. Approaches are chosen to fit you, for example CBT for patterns of worry, DBT skills for intense emotions, or EMDR for trauma. NIMH explains these psychotherapies if you want to read more.
  • Families can be involved when that helps. For teens, parents are part of the work through our family services. For adults, anyone else is involved only with your written permission.
  • More support is available without a program schedule. If weekly therapy is not enough, the Concierge Outpatient Program offers 3 to 5 hours a week of one-on-one care with no groups and no hour requirements.

Our office hours are Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM. When you call, tell us what times work for you and we will look for a therapist whose schedule fits.

How psychiatry is arranged

Some people who start therapy also want an opinion on medication, or already take medication and want one team managing it. Blackburn psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners provide psychiatric evaluations and ongoing medication management, and they coordinate with your therapist so the plan works as one. When you call, our team explains how psychiatric appointments are scheduled and what to expect at the first one. Learn more on our psychiatry page or, if substance use is part of the picture, our addiction psychiatry and dual diagnosis pages.
